SBAV Celebrates CHAP GOH MEI' 08 in Hanoi
Saturday, 03.22.2008, 03:49am (GMT)

SBAV Chap Goh Meh Charity Dinner
On 21 Feb   2008, the SBAV organised a dinner at the Golden Ballroom, Fortuna  Hotel.  The event was to enable members  especially those who were away from their families to celebrate Chap Goh  Meh  -   the 15th day of the Lunar New Year.   In fact, is we had more than one good reason to gather and celebrate.

The occasion also marked the 10th Anniversary of the SBAV.  Singaporeans have ventured into Vietnam long ago but it was in 1998 that the community formed and registered SBAV.  We have the founder members to thank for making that move.  Singaporeans since then have an official organization and platform here in Vietnam to represent them and for assistance in networking

On the night of the event, we had a joyful breaking news  -  that Singapore had won the bid to host the first ever Youth Olympics in 2010.  This really made us Singaporeans feel proud.  It is a testament that the IOC recognizes the organization ability of Singapore and that the small island country has the spirit as well as backing of its people.

The greatest reason to celebrate was that the event brought out the true spirit of the Singapore community and friends.  About 390 Singaporeans and friends responded to SBAV’s appeal for support for our charity project.  Besides paying US$50 each to attend this charity dinner, they responded by donating very generously when the Exco members and Ambassador T K Lim went on stage to sing “We are the World”.  After deducting expenses, the event raised nearly US$22,000 for the SBAV charity fund.

Thank you very much for your kind support and donation.  Special thanks to Dennis Tee, our Honorary Secretary who flew back to Hanoi at his own expense to be MC for the event.  Fortuna Hotel once again supported greatly, this time by charging a much discounted rate for the dinner, thus enabling us to net a bigger surplus for the fund.  Notable mentions are donations from Frankie Ang and Tan Ah Yau.  They have left Hanoi but kept very much in touch with SBAV.

The SBAV knows that success in raising this charity fund is not the end but the start of our social work.  We now have the fund needed to carry out projects at the Center for Year 2008.  They include English language and IT classes for the orphans and handicraft and physiotherapy classes for the disabled aged.

In Summary:
